Apple’s (AAPL) recent iOS 18.3 update integrates Starlink’s technology into select iPhone models, enabling users to send text messages via satellite when cellular service is unavailable.

This new feature is powered by a collaboration between Apple, SpaceX, and T-Mobile (TMUS) – and allows for more reliable communication in areas with poor cellular coverage.

Here’s what else you should know about the Apple-Starlink integration that’s reportedly included in the iOS 18.3 update.

Why Is the Starlink Integration a Game Changer for Apple?

According to Mario Nawfal, the founder of IBC, access to Starlink satellites that comes with the iOS 18.3 update is a “game changer” even though Apple has been offering a similar feature on its flagship smartphone since 2022.

Until now, the company had been working with Globalstar (GSAT) for Emergency SOS via satellite. However, the Nasdaq-listed firm has fewer satellites that operate on a higher orbit than SpaceX.

This means iPhone users need a clear line of sight to establish a connection with Globalstar’s satellites. Plus, their reliance on narrow-beam communication results in signal disruption due to obstacles like trees or buildings as well.

Starlink, on the other hand, has a much larger satellite constellation in low Earth orbit (LEO) that essentially “works right from your pocket,” Nawfal added in a recent X post.

Starlink Satellite Access Is Not Yet Available to All Users

Note that Starlink integration on iOS 18.3 will likely come in handy during emergencies, especially in rural areas with no cellular coverage.

Initially, the said service enables text messaging only – but future updates are expected to include support for photos, music, and videos via satellite as well. It’s available on select iPhone models and to customers of T-Mobile (TMUS) in the U.S. only, for now.

What’s also worth noting is that iPhone maker does not currently have a direct partnership with Starlink. This integration is solely a result of collaboration between Apple, SpaceX, and T-Mobile.

Is the iOS 18.3 Update a Reason Enough to Buy Apple Stock?

For investors, the iOS 18.3 update that enables access to Starlink technology signals Apple’s deep commitment to satellite technology, opening doors for subscription-based satellite services.

If the tech behemoth does indeed monetize this feature eventually, it could create a new revenue stream that boosts its services segment, which already contributes more than $100 billion to its top line annually.

According to Barchart, analysts currently rate AAPL shares at “Overweight” and see upside in them to $231 on average, indicating potential for a 15% rally from current levels.
